What Should You Do to Get Your Sprinklers Ready for Spring?

Buda, United States - February 23, 2023 / Austex Sprinklers /

Spring is, without a doubt, the most exciting season of the year for your lawn. Nature is at its most creative during this time, characterized by widespread new growth and blooms. Lush vegetation requires a lot of water, so a sprinkler system that is in good working order is key to enjoying the fruits of springtime. If you don’t have one yet, now is the best time for sprinkler installation. Otherwise, a check-up and tune-up is necessary for your sprinklers.

Sprinkler system inspection and maintenance are necessary to identify and prevent issues like leaks or broken parts that could harm your grass, flowers, and plants and raise your water bill. When it comes to keeping your sprinkler system working at its best, trust the experts at Austex Sprinklers.

When to Schedule Sprinkler Inspection?

It is advised to schedule an inspection twice a year: before the system is turned on in the spring, and once again when shutting it down in the fall. Inspections help to identify any problems, allowing you to start making plans for any needed sprinkler repair. The ideal time to arrange your spring checkup and repair is really in late winter, from January to early March, so you'll be prepared for spring. Moreover, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your sprinkler system is capable of handling the demands of spring and summer.

Three Keys to Inspections

1. Sprinkler heads

To assess any damage from freezing water during the winter, it's crucial to inspect each head to ensure it's functioning properly. Remember that sprinkler heads have a lifespan and may develop typical wear and tear symptoms with time. To avoid problems, replace any heads that are beginning to show signs of wear. We don’t recommend cheap heads from big-box merchants because they deteriorate quickly.

Get our help also to make sure that you have optimal coverage. The incorrect aim can result in water waste and increased costs. You don't want water splashing on buildings or walkways. We will make sure that all areas are receiving enough water to prevent dry patches and dead plants.

2. Pipes

Even if pipes were checked in the fall, inspecting them for leaks and cracks in spring is necessary. Roots can develop around lines and cause cracks, and frozen water can also cause damage.

3. Controllers

Check that your controller's settings are suitable for your landscape and within your jurisdiction’s guidelines. Be sure you're not watering your plants more than what is needed. Install a rain sensor, if you don't already have one, to avoid damage due to overwatering. Most turf needs 1" of water per week. Overwatering may lead to damage and an unnecessary increase in water bills.
